Eugene Pook


Hailing from Ipoh, Eugene Pook is Founder, Music Director and Conductor of the Selangor Symphony Orchestra. Eugene’s selfless contribution to the music industry has benefited youths and communities of all races and backgrounds as well as professional musicians in Malaysia. In 2012, he was awarded the “10 Outstanding Young Malaysians Award” for his cultural contributions and achievements.


Eugene Pook’s guest appearances with professional orchestras include the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, Pleven Philharmonic, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Henan Symphony Orchestra, Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, and Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra. Eugene studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music (Canada), University of Missouri, Kansas City, and the Eastman School of Music. He has taught at the University of Malaya and British International School Kuala Lumpur and is endorser of the Antigua Winds (USA). 

In addition to producing concerts and conducting orchestras around the world, Eugene is also a professional clarinetist.  As a winner of the Concerto Competition of at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (USA), Eugene’s clarinet recitals have been much sought after and performed at prestigious venues such as  the Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Malaysia Embassy (Washington DC, USA), and the European Union Embassy (Washington DC, USA). 

Jonah Chong


Jonah Chong is an IT consultant and software engineer by profession, who is passionate about helping business executives to expand their companies through the application of creative marketing initiatives. He has worked for local and global corporate clients on optimization, understanding and gathering their needs to deliver appropriate solutions. Having obtained his Master of Business Administration (Merit) from Cardiff Metropolitan University, he is actively engaging himself in music and devotes his time in promoting orchestra activities and to help making our society a much better place to live in. Joonah holds a Bachelor’s degree (Honours) in Electronic and Computer Engineering from University of Leeds.

Ergys Koni

String Coach

Albanian violinist Ergys Koni has performed nearly 4000 concerts appearing as a solo, chamber, and orchestral violinist. Mr. Koni has been a member of the first violin section of Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra from 2007 to 2015. In addition, he has served as concertmaster in the Folkwang Kammer Orchester in Germany and the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) in Malaysia and a member of the first violin section of the Rotterdams Philharmonic Orkest in Holland for seven years. Throughout his career, he has played under the baton of celebrated conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Valery Gergiev, and Riccardo Chailly, to name a few. A holder of a Master’s degree in Music, Ergys began to play the violin at the age of six upon entering the “Jordan Misja” special school for gifted children in Tirana, Albania. He went on to study under Professor Ibrahim Madhi at the Academy of the Arts in Tirana, where he played as concertmaster in the chamber orchestra and began touring internationally.

Calvin Tang

String Coach

Native of Taiping, Perak, received his Bachelor Degree in Music from University Malaysia Sarawak in 2015. He is proficient in conducting, violin, piano, cello, music arrangement, studio recording and mixing. Calvin has performed with the Symphony Orchestra Negeri Sarawak, Orchestra Tradisional Malaysia, and has participated as a 1st violinist at the 10th Mini Film Festival and Sarawak Innovations Festival. As an active and versatile musician, he frequently evolves himself in organising and conducting concerts by producing innovative concert programme incorporating pop, film and classical music, to make music accessible to a wider audience. Calvin is thrilled to join the Eugene Pook Orchestra Academy and be part of its vision to bring the joy of orchestral learning and performing activities to more people.

Dr. Taichi Akutsu


Violinist, Educator, Researcher

Seisa University, Japan

Shujitsu University, Japan

Dr. Taichi Akutsu is a Japanese violinist-teacher-researcher and a full time lecturer at Seisa University and Shujitsu University. He has earned multiple degrees BM, Tokyo College of Music; MM, Manhattan School of Music (2005) in Orchestral Performance Program; MA, from Lehman College, The City University of New York (2011) in Music Teaching and PhD in Education, from Tokyo Gakugei University.


Dr. Akutsu studied the violin with Mr. Glenn Dicterow, former concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, and was also a principal violinist of the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas (2006- 2009).


He gained teaching experiences in community music schools and public schools in NYC and Miami, Florida. While focusing on children’s musical engagement and human development, Dr. Akutsu recently presented research and practice in Helsinki, New Orleans, Seattle, Miami, New York, Seoul, and Tokyo.

Min Yen Chien


Professor of Violin, Taipei National University of the Arts, Taiwan

Min Yen Chien is one of the foremost and first generation of Taiwanese international violinists. Born on August 2. 1953 into a medical and musical family in Nantou, Taiwan. He started his violin lessons at age seven, and by the age of eight, he had won the first prize of the National Violin Competition for children in Taiwan. Chein came to the United States in 1967 and entered the Pre-College Division of the Juilliard School in 1968 as a full scholarship student. With the Scholarship funded by the Rotary Club of New Jersey, Chien received his Bachelor (1975) and Master (1976) Degrees in Music from Juilliard School in New York.


In 1991 Min Yen Chien made his Alice Tully Hall debut in New York City with pianist Wendy Fang Chen to a sold out capacity. And since 1986 he has been on the faculty of the Taipei National University of the Arts in Taipei. Taiwan.

Charlotte Leng (Malaysia)

Violist & Early Childhood Music Specialist, British International School Kuala Lumpur

Charlotte began teaching in London, UK in 2002, as an instrumental teacher and then as a Music and Movement specialist in various Early Years settings across the city. In Malaysia, she has taught music at KS2 and KS3 level at an international school in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and then had the opportunity to teach children right through from Early Years and Primary to Year 7 at British International School Kuala Lumpur (BSKL). Currently working with BSKL's youngest learners, from Early Years and KS1, which is where Charlotte's true passion lies, she is developing ways to inspire in the children a love of music by creating music together and developing their musical awareness through movement, improvisation and singing. She is also very keen to develop music-making with BSKL's youngest musicians through the Training Orchestra and our instrumental programme for students who are learning an instrument privately at school. In her spare time, Charlotte enjoys running and more recently, the Brazilian martial art Capoeria.
